Rules of the Challenge!

The Challenge has evolved since its beginning.  The rules were overhauled prior to the American segment.  In light of lessons learned while that series of flight legs has been proceeding, further revision is prudent.

The objective of the rules are, first and foremost, fair play for all participants in the selection of who flies to which destinations.  Of secondary importance is the maintenance of continuity in the process.  The ATWC is not a race, but it is entertainment – it serves the participants and the viewers to keep it moving at a reasonably steady and predictable pace.

Bidding

For each new region, bids will be placed and flights awarded in one or more rounds. A bidding window of at least 30 hours duration will be announced in advance for each round. This is in consideration of pilots in different time zones.  No bids will be accepted until the window opens.  No flights will be awarded until the window closes.

Bids will not be accepted unless they are submitted through the link below. Please do not attempt to bid by IM, in a forum post, to a different e-mail address or by any other means.

If you use Web-mail please mail cut and paste the following "Around The World Challenge bid/query" into the subject line so that it will be delivered to the controllers.

You can bid to fly as many legs as you wish in each round, but you should indicate your order of preference so that your bids can be compared to those of other pilots. If you do not indicate a preference your list order will constitute your preference ranking.

If you submit more than one bid e-mail in a round, the latest one received will be the only one considered and its receipt time will be used.  If you wish to amend your list, submit a complete list in the later e-mail, not just the change

Flights will be awarded based on 1) highest ranked preference, and 2) order received.  Pilot A’s first choice trumps Pilot B’s second choice, regardless of the order in which they were received.  If Pilot C and Pilot D both indicate a leg as their first choice, the bid received earliest gets the flight.

If flights remain open after the first round of bidding, subsequent rounds may be administered to receive bids for the remaining flight legs or (at the discretion of the controller) where no bids are received for a leg the controller will post a request in the NOTAM notice board section in the Challenge homepage and in the forum at the Challenge Control Centre (CCC).

Flight Legs

The challenge is not a precisely timed event; however, it is desirable that our flights be executed at a reasonably steady pace. This helps maintain continuity and interest in the ATWC, and allows pilots assigned to upcoming flights to have some idea when their turn will come.

You should be prepared to fly with reasonable promptness when your turn comes around. Flight leg assignments will be known well ahead of time. If you anticipate difficulty flying your assigned leg in a timely manner, consider flying it early and preparing your post ahead of time.

Your flight leg results should be posted between 36 and 96 hours after the posting time of the preceding leg. This allows sufficient time for viewing and comments before the next post appears to claim our attention, but doesn’t make us wait too long for the next adventure. Please make every effort to honour these guidelines.

If you know well in advance that you will not be able to fly or post in accordance with the above, please email the Controller at the  and the Controller will award your flight to the next pilot who has a bid in or put out a general request in the NOTAM notice board section in the Challenge homepage.

If a pilot does not fly his/her leg within the guideline times above, the awarding of the flight will lapse.  The flight may then be re-assigned as determined by the controller.

If any of the above is unclear please feel free to mail me for clarification

Whilst you are free to use your shots in other forums we respectfully ask that you do not post the whole flight posted here as this infringes my copyright and the reason for hosting it on Mutley's.  We ask that you post a couple of "teasers" and a link back to the full flight on Mutley's.

The controller's decision is final. By bidding for a leg you are giving your acceptance to the rules posted here.

In my absence my co-controllers Dave Gorman (Dgor), John Allard or Dai Williams (ddavid) will deputise and their decisions will stand.
